Selective CO Methanation on Ru/TiO2 Catalysts: Role and Influence of Metal−Support Interactions

چکیده
Aiming at a detailed understanding of the role of metal−support interactions in the selective methanation of CO in CO2-rich reformate gases, we have investigated the catalytic performance of a set of Ru/TiO2 catalysts with comparable Ru loading, Ru particle size, and TiO2 phase composition but very different surface areas (ranging from 20 to 235 m g−1) in this reaction. The activity for CO methanation, under steady-state conditions, was found to strongly depend on the TiO2 support surface area, increasing first with increasing surface area up to a maximum activity for the Ru/TiO2 catalyst with a surface area of 121 m 2 g−1 and then decreasing for an even higher surface area; however, the selectivity is mainly determined by the Ru particle size, which slightly decreases with increasing support surface area. This goes along with an increase in selectivity for CO methanation, in agreement with a model proposed previously for nonreducible supports. In situ infrared measurements further revealed that also the adsorption properties for these catalysts, as evidenced by the CO adsorption strength, change significantly with increasing catalyst surface area and that strong metal−support interactions cause a partial overgrowth of the Ru nanoparticles for the highest surface area catalyst. The interplay between catalyst surface area and reaction characteristics and the important role of metal−support interactions in the reaction, in addition to particle size effects, will be elucidated and discussed.

Influence of TiO2 bulk defects on the CO adsorption and CO oxidation on Au/TiO2 – Electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI) in supported Au catalysts
Electronic metal-support interactions (EMSI) are demonstrated to severely affect the CO oxidation activity and the CO adsorption properties of Au/TiO2 catalysts. Bulk oxygen vacancies, generated by a strongly reductive pre-treatment of Au/TiO2 at elevated temperature in 10% CO/N2, significantly lower the catalytic activity for CO oxidation at 80°C. With time on stream, the activity slowly incre...

Carbon materials have rarely been used as support for CO2 methanation, which is usually carried out using catalysts supported on metal oxides. Here, it is shown that Ru nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (NCNF) provide competitive CH4 production rate and stability compared to Al2 O3 -supported catalysts. Contrary to the general belief about the inert nature of carbon su...

Current industrial catalysts for the water-gas shift reaction are commonly mixtures of Fe-Cr and Zn-Al-Cu oxides, used at temperatures between 350-500oC and 180250oC, respectively. These oxide catalysts are pyrophoric and normally require lengthy and complex activation steps before usage. Improved catalysts are being sought, particularly for lower temperature (e.g., at T<150oC, equilibrium lowe...

Ruthenium site structures supported on metal oxide surfaces were designed by reacting organometallic Ru cluster [Ru6C(CO)16](2-) or [Ru6(CO)18](2-) with various metal oxides, TiO2, Al2O3, MgO, and SiO2. The surface Ru site structure, formed under various catalyst preparation and reaction conditions, was investigated by the Ru K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Samples of [...

An empirical rate equation was obtained for the methanation kinetics catalyzed by MCR-2X, a commercial catalyst prepared by Haldor-Topsoe. The studies were carried out in a fixed-bed reactor under differential conditions, and in a gradientless recycle reactor (Berry) over a range of total pressures, reactant concentractions (H2/CO ratios), and temperatures. The kinetics of methanation were foun...
